Wildcats vs Nittany Lions - Two Different Games… (and Iowa Preview)

NU Plays Two Different Games, But Loses The One That Counts

If the game ended at halftime, the Wildcats would have won a dominating performance over the Nittany Lions 21 - 7. However, football is a 60 minute game, not a 28 minute one. At the end of 60 minutes, the Wildcats were embarrassed 35 - 21. And the game wasn’t even that close.

For some reason, most of the Wildcats just gave up somewhere between late in the 2nd quarter and early in the 3rd quarter. Persa didn’t. A few others didn’t. But most did. Or it appeared that way on TV.

Okay, I’m unhappy with the loss. But the people calling for Coach Fitzgerald to be fired are just plain crazy. Every program is going to have up years and down years. Look at JoePa - yes, I understand your outrage, but stick with me. Even he’s had losing seasons. At the beginning of this year, a number of you were talking that you hoped Coach Fitz would be the JoePa of Northwestern.

I expect better from the Wildcats. Obviously, so do many NU fans. We’re all upset about the loss - especially the fact that so many players apparently just gave up after leading 21 - 0 or were dazzled by the media coverage.

I’m not even doing The Good and The Bad this week. We all saw the same BAD loss - NU played about 28 out of the 60 minutes. Persa was all heart - he was like a matador out there. There were others who showed up to play as well. Let’s hope that everyone gets with the program on Saturday.

I’m done. Everyone should move on. Trust me, the Dark Times were far worse.

Iowa Preview

Since last year the Iowa fans have been obsessed with Northwestern. I think it has something to do with Stanzi almost getting killed in the endzone and Iowa losing their collective national title hopes. I read Black Heart Gold Pants for the laughs. (For the record Mr. (or Ms.) BHGP, I do not own an Armani suit or a Maserati. But I am doing quite well, thank you.) Given the constant obsession and hatred of all things Northwestern, I would say that BHGP has a crush on NU. Or desperately wishes they had gone there. Or both.

Okay, let’s do some prognostication.

The Good: The Cats play a full 60 minutes. Northwestern goes totally medieval on the Hawkeyes. Persa puts on a clinic. The run game shows up again. The defense is so dominant that Stanzi runs for his life - again. By the end of the game, the Wildcat fans forgive the past month. NU’s bowl prospects look tons better. Final score: Wildcats 28 - Hawkeyes 13. Blood Pressure at end: 154/97

The Bad: The Wildcats don’t much show up to play. Instead of 28 minutes of great play (re: last week), the fans get to see about 18 or so. The game becomes a train wreck. Iowa takes out several years of frustration on this year’s Wildcats. It is absolutely horrible to behold. Final score: NU 10 - Iowa 45. Blood Pressure at end: 140/90, out of resignation.

The Probable: The Cats play Jekyll and Hyde. Frankly, I’d like to see the ravenous Jekyll feeding on helpless Hawkeyes. I don’t want to see any meek Hydes out on the field. But we Wildcat fans get to see both. It’s really scary. And frankly, I don’t know the end of this horror movie. Final score: Northwestern 28 - Iowa 26 (I hope). Blood Pressure at end: 174/107 with possible nosebleeds.

This Week 15 Years Ago…

I’ll get back to this particular part of my column ASAP. Life’s been busy...

Go ‘Cats!

  1. Nice to get the victory but you hate to see a kid like Persa suffer that injury.
