Wildcat Basketball - 2010 Looks Like a Breakthrough Year (According to SI)

Outback Bowl: Wildcats Versus Tigers - It isn’t the size of the cat in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the ‘Cats.

I don’t follow basketball as closely as I do football. But this year’s Wildcat men’s basketball team is impossible to ignore - they’re now a very impressive 10-1 entering the Big Ten conference schedule. In addition to picking up some votes in the various polls, the Wildcats are currently predicted to do something they’ve never accomplished - make it to the NCAA Tournament.

SI.com is already predicting brackets for the tournament and they picked NU to make it to the tournament for the very first time ever. They are currently picked as the #12 seed in the Midwest Region with an opening round in Spokane.

It’s too early to bet the farm on this, but if the ‘Cat’s continue their winning ways, 2010 could be the year that both football and basketball make it into the Top 25. Further, 2010 could be the year that a 60-year and a forever-year drought is broken - the Wildcats winning a bowl game and the Wildcats going to the NCAA Tournament.

BTW, a little history - when I was an undergrad at NU, not only did I see a lot of futility on the football gridiron, I saw a lot of futility on the basketball court. However, I was a varsity athlete on the only winning men’s team of the time - Fencing. More to follow...

Go ‘Cats!
