Look Ahead to the Season

Northwestern had a highly successful 9-4 season. I’ll not go into the details; read my columns from last year. One thing I’ll note that I’ve not seen/heard in several years - even the local Ohio State fans note that they can’t take NU for granted as a “gimme win” anymore. Of course they don’t play us this year, but you get the sentiment.

Looking ahead to this season, things look pretty good. But I’m not going to assume that there are any “gimme wins” for Northwestern - not even Division 1-AA...er, FCS Towson University. (Towson is near Baltimore, MD. I’ll write about that game in the next few days.) The collective opinion in the magazines, papers, and web seem to be a middling-to-decent season with a better than even chance of going to a bowl game. The collective opinion is also that there is little chance of a Big Ten Championship.

My opinion - on paper the defense looks solid and could be outstanding. The offense is a question mark. I think NU will go to a bowl game. I think they run a chance of getting at least a piece of the Big Ten title. But rather than go through and pull an “exact” guess at the number of wins out of thin air before the first snap, I’ll wait until after the Towson game for that.

But I think we’re in for some fun this year.
